Learning and Research Support Service (LARSS)
The School’s Learning and Research Support Service (LARSS) provides a range of excellent facilities for use by students and staff. It is managed as an integrated organisation with more than 20 staff working in a number of specialist working groups.
LARSS is managed by Huw Dobson (Service Manager) and Neil Porritt (Assistant Service Manager).
HelpDesk
Your "one-stop" point of access to any of the LARSS services is the HelpDesk located in the Project Room (2Q30). It is open from Monday to Friday - 9am to 6pm.
Project Room
The Project Room, with approximately 100 workplaces, provides facilities for individual and group working backed up with a wide choice of study materials, specialist publications and sources and a lending system for video, sound recording and photographic equipment.
Laboratories
There are five specialist laboratories, each with modern equipment and facilities:
- Earth Sciences
- Environmental Change
- Surveying Technology
- Environmental Physics
- Concrete and Environmental Services
Audio, video and graphics
An Audio-Visual and Video Group provides video and editing facilities, sound recording facilities and a photographic and digital imaging service. The Graphics Unit provides a graphics service for all activities of the School and employs graphics industry standard equipment and software for the output of research publications, displays, illustrations and posters etc.
The Learning Development Team
The Learning Development Team provides support for the development and implementation of methods of educational delivery including open learning and the development of web technologies for learning, research and administration.
IT Support and Cartographic Resource Centre
The IT Support Team provides computing support for staff and students as well as supporting six general purpose computer laboratories, a specialist Spatial Analysis Laboratory and integrated computing facilities in the studios of the School's recently opened Studios Building. A Cartographic Resource Centre provides mapping facilities and a digital map resource complemented by a traditional paper map collection.
