Geography teaching and research are supported by dedicated facilities including laboratories for physical geography, environmental change, and GIS and remote sensing. Our postgraduate students are studying on a variety of taught Masters courses or conducting PhD research.
Stimulating degree courses
Our degree courses tackle many of the challenges facing humankind in a dynamic world, including climate change, resource exploitation, conservation and development. Our graduates have solid academic credentials in research, inquiry and critical thinking, plus a range of field and technical skills. They are equipped with transferable skills in written and verbal communication, data collection, assimilation and analysis, teamwork and time management. Our teaching is underpinned by a wide range of ongoing staff research projects located around the world. In their 2nd year, students may experience some of these research environments through fieldwork in Tunisia , France , Malta or Spain . Students also benefit from our research into teaching and learning which creates a stimulating, active and rewarding learning environment.
Fieldwork
Fieldwork is at the heart of geography, tourism and environmental
management at UWE. In year one, students participate in a residential field course in Devon
or South Wales . In the 2 nd year, students choose between a residential field course in either
Brittany ( France ), Andalucia (Spain), Malta or Tunisia , the cost of which is subsidised by
the University. In all three years of our courses we also undertake field days in the local area.
Choice
Our modular degrees are structured to give you choice. The first year of our BA Geography and BSc Geography & Environmental Management programmes share common modules which allows you to swap between programmes at the end of this year if you wish. As you progress into years 2 and 3, you will be able to tailor your degree to suit your own interests by selecting from a number of optional modules. Our wide range of teaching and research specialisms gives you a largely unrestricted choice of dissertation topic in your final year. You may spend all or part of your 3rd year on an academic exchange at a University in Europe, returning in year 4 to complete your degree.
Employable graduates
Our emphasis on transferable skills and work experience makes our graduates highly employable. UWE geography graduates can be found in fields such as resource management, planning, countryside management, teaching, GIS and environmental conservation. Their employers include government agencies, local authorities, environmental and landscape consultancies, multi-national companies and the voluntary sector.
